Thanksgiving Pet Safety

November 15 2024

How is Thanksgiving already here? The year seems to have flown by. One thing we are most grateful for is our pets. Our furry pals give us unconditional love, support, comfort, friendship, and endless cuddles. Plus, their cute and silly antics keep us giggling even on bad days. However, Turkey Day has some risks for pet owners to be aware of. Read on for Thanksgiving pet safety tips from a Walton County vet.

What Kind Of Meat Can Pets Eat?

Let your pet try that tasty turkey!

Meat is usually fine if well-cooked. There are a few concerns, though. The main thing is to never give your pet boned meat. Cooking bones makes them brittle and sharp. They can break off, and can cause choking and internal injury if ingested.

Liver should be given rarely. Otherwise, Vitamin A toxicity could be a risk. Bacon and sausage should be served sparingly. Finally, avoid giving pets sauced or topped foods. You should also avoid feeding pets garlic, onion, and other dangerous foods.

The same rules apply to poultry and fish.

What Fruits Are Pet-Safe?

Our list of safe and dangerous meals for dogs and cats is similar. Fruits can be sugary, so you don’t want to offer too much, but small amounts are fine.

Here are some safe options:

  • Apple
  • Raspberries
  • Watermelon
  • Blueberries
  • Bananas
  • Pears
  • Cantaloupe
  • Mango
  • Pineapple
  • Orange
  • Peaches
  • Strawberries
  • Cranberries
  • Apricots
  • Blackberries
  • Figs

What Are Some Pet-Safe Vegetables?

Fluffy and Fido are carnivores, but they can benefit from veggies just as much as people can.

Some of the safe options are as follows:

  • Carrots
  • Green Beans
  • Broccoli
  • Celery
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Beets
  • Peas
  • Spinach
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Cucumber
  • Kale
  • Bell pepper
  • Squash
  • Potato
  • Zucchini
  • Cauliflower
  • Corn
  • Lettuce
  • Pumpkin
  • Asparagus
  • Cabbage
  • Blueberries

You should remove seeds, pips, and rinds before giving fruit to your furry pal. Ask your vet for more information.

What Foods Are Dangerous To Pets?

Many healthful foods are hazardous to pets. Dogs are riskier because they eat almost anything, whereas cats are pickier. However, some cats consume anything they can reach. In general, never give your pet anything without first checking its safety.

Here are some of the unsafe foods:

  • Grapes, Currants, Raisins
  • Xylitol
  • Garlic, Onion, Scallions, Chives
  • Corn On The Cob
  • Tomatoes
  • Alcohol
  • Meat On The Bone
  • Caffeine
  • Avocado
  • Chocolate
  • Raw dough/yeast

Ask your Walton County vet for particular guidance.

Helping Pets Cope With Guests

Are you planning for a full house? Reuniting with loved ones over excellent meals is always great. Love, comfort, and coziness from pets also make those moments extra special. You will need to take a few precautions to keep pets safe and calm, though.

  • Keep  up with veterinary care! We always recommend that people get their pets fixed and microchipped, and stay current on vaccines and parasite-control. This is really just good general pet care, but it’s still worth repeating!
  • Ask guests not to feed or treat your pet without your permission. Young children may try to feed your pet, so this is crucial.
  • Pets often get underfoot. A curious, friendly pet might easily get trodden on or get their paws or tails caught in a door or chair. Watch Fido and Fluffy closely.
  • Remember that some pets handle guests better than others. Before guests arrive, tire out your pet with a fun play session. You can also offer a new toy as a distraction.
  • If your pet is very anxious, contact your vet about calming products. You can also learn ways to help your pet cope.
