Entertaining A Senior Dog

December 1 2024

Is your canine buddy starting to go a bit grey around the muzzle? Has Fido been slowing down lately? Perhaps you’ve noticed that your pet is just not as interested in chasing squirrels as he once was. It can be both adorable and bittersweet to realize that your furry best friend is now a four-legged retiree. However, while you will need to make changes to your canine pal’s care regime, you will need to focus more on comfort than entertainment. However, your cute pet will still need some stimulation. Read on as a local Walton County vet offers some tips on entertaining an older dog.

Is Play Important For Older Dogs?

Yes! Fido will always be a puppy at heart, and he will never outgrow his love of—and need for—toys and enrichment. Playing and entertainment actually provide several benefits to your furry pal.

Here are a few of the key ones:

Mental Stimulation: Just like people, pets often go through a sort of cognitive decline as they age. When Fido runs after that ball, or tries to sniff out that treat you hid, he’ll need to concentrate. That is great for his mind. In a way, you could consider it a doggy version of a crossword puzzle. This can also keep your pet’s mind sharp as he ages.

Physical Activity: Physical activity is important for both people and pets of all ages. At this stage of his life, you don’t want to overexert Fido or coax him into activities that may no longer be safe. Your pet will still need some activity, though. This will help keep his bones and muscles strong, which is very important. It’s also great for his heart, lungs, and, well, pretty much everything else.

Bonding: One thing that makes dogs so special is their ability to form extremely close bonds with their humans. Play sessions help reinforce that special link between you and Fido. When you take time to play with your pet, he’ll know you’re doing something for his benefit.

Fun: Last but not least, playtime is just fun. Man’s Best Friend has a quite jovial, curious, and fun-loving nature. Your pet will always enjoy his favorite activities.

How Do I Entertain My Old Dog?

You’ll need to take a few precautions as your canine pal gets older. Fido will get tired out more quickly than he used to. He’s also more at risk of injuring himself through slips and falls than he once was. You’ll want to start focusing on activities that challenge your pet’s mind without taxing his body.

Mental stimulation is the way to go here.

  • Look for things like treat-dispensing toys and puzzle toys. These engage Fido’s mind and force him to really think. Consider it a doggy version of a problem-solving game.
  • Forget that old saying: you actually can teach an old dog new tricks. By the time your pet reaches retirement age, he should already know the basic commands, such as Sit, Stay, Heel, and Come. If not, it’s never too late to learn. You can also work on new tricks. If Fido already has an impressive repertoire, run through the things he knows. This can also be a great mood boost. Dogs always look super cute when they are proudly soaking up praise!
  • Scavenger hunts are another great choice. Hide small snacks or toys around your place, and let Fido go find them. While this is often popular for all dogs, it really goes over well with scent hounds.
  • Use interactive toys. Fido can still Fetch! You just want to opt for things that are soft on his mouth. Older dogs also often prefer things that light up or make noise, and are easy to track. Tug ropes can also work for this.
  • New toys! Never underestimate the positive impact of just getting your pet something new.
  • Many dogs can also learn to find specific items by name. This also helps with Fido’s natural instincts to hunt and track things.

How To Spend Quality Time With A Senior Dog?

Fido doesn’t need fancy food or spectacular views to enjoy spending time with his favorite human (you). Just make it a point to pay attention to him. Something as simple as giving your canine pal a head scratch as you pass by can help.

What Are Some Good Activities For Older Dogs?

We’ve listed some great doggy entertainment options that will provide mental enrichment. There are also things you can do outside with your canine buddy. Swimming is a great option for many older dogs. As with people, it’s a great, no-impact cardio workout. Because the water will support Fido’s weight, it’s easy on his joints.

Walking is just as popular with older dogs as it is with puppies. Take Fido to new places. Just keep in mind that your furry pal will tire out more quickly than he once did.

Car rides are also a fun option for many dogs. Just put your pet’s safety first. We always recommend that dogs travel in crates. This protects them from being jostled or, in case of an accident, thrown around. And while hopefully this goes without saying, we can’t overstate this one: never leave your pet unattended in a vehicle.

How Do I Keep My Older Dog Happy?

Senior dogs tend to be very sweet and lovable. In fact, they have this friendly demeanor that can just melt hearts. At the end of the day, what Fido really wants is to be with you and spend time with you. Pay some extra attention to your pet, and make sure that he feels loved and safe. This doesn’t have to be difficult or time-consuming. Small things like ear scritches and belly rubs will go a long way toward keeping that tail going.

Of course, keeping your canine buddy in good health will also go a long way. Be sure to bring your furry pal to your Walton County animal clinic regularly. This is also a great time to get advice on your pet’s changing needs. We’re happy to help!

What Should I Consider When Playing With An Older Dog?

Fido’s safety should always come first and foremost. There are a few things to keep in mind here. We already mentioned the fact that senior dogs can get tired out very easily. This is particularly concerning because our canine buddies will push themselves to the point of exhaustion to please their humans. Keep a close eye out for signs of fatigue, such as panting or lagging behind. If you notice any, immediately end playtime and let your pooch recoup.

Also, only play with Fido in areas that are safe. We would recommend either a soft grassy yard or a carpeted room. That way, Fido will have some cushioning if he slips and falls.

Your four-legged best friend may still enjoy playdates with other dogs, but you will need to take care to choose playmates that will be gentle and won’t wear him out.
